History

Port Dickson began as a small Malay village inhabited by fishermen and traders. Originally named 'Arang,' after a nearby coal mine. Tin ore was discovered about 7 kilometers north of Lukut in the 1820s, resulting in an influx of Chinese migrants. Sir Frederic Dickson, a British official during the colonial era, transformed Arang into a port for transporting the rich tin ore deposits.

Port Dickson was renamed and developed into a bustling, railway-connected harbour. The town evolved into a beach resort destination after the tin ore trade declined, with its popularity peaking in the 1990s as large numbers of visitors poured in from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The development of beachfront property has been accelerating at an alarming rate, fueled by investor speculation and tourist traffic.

The sparkling beaches were polluted at their peak, and the clear seas became a turbid mess of brown water. Visitors steadily declined as a result of the poor holiday environment, culminating in the Asian economic crisis, which halted development.

Hotel companies quickly collaborated with civil authorities to clean up Port Dickson after discovering their cracked honeypot, but it took several years to restore the beach and sea waters. Today, PD has recovered and is on the rise, with increased visitors and resort development.
